Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor Drake may not be very good at picking girl friends (that means you RiRI). And we all know Drake is not the best dancer. But one thing Drake is really good at is spotting talent. Drake spotted two University of Toronto students (Majid Maskati and Jordan Ullman) who put a project on Sound Cloud. And before they knew it, they were writing and producing a hit song for Drake called “Hold On, We’re Going. Home.” And Drake even featured them on the song. The duo goes by the name Majid Jordan.
Majid Jordan
The name Majid Jordan is the combination of their first names. And since 2012 they have been busy producing R&B/House grooves. In 2013 they signed onto OVO Sound, the record label co-founded by rapper Drake, producer Noah “40” Shebib and Oliver El-Khatib.
Possibly the standout single from their self-titled debut album is “Every Step Every Way.” It’s a slow groove with a catchy slow heavy baseline. And Majid sings practically the entire song in falsetto. The Majid Jordan sound can be best described as a cross between the Pet Shop Boys and Justin Timberlake. It’s a smooth soul meets synthesizers which results in absolute coolness.
Every Step Every Way Video
Majid Jordan used Common Goods to direct the video which is absolutely mesmerizing. The special effects are simple, colorful and blends the right amount of post-production magic. One feels almost as if they were in a nightclub watching them perform in darkness. It feels intimate yet haunting. The directors use a combination of animation and neon-colored liquid motion effects to put the viewer in a dream-like trance.
In fact the video won Best Post-Production award at MuchMusic Video Awards in 2016. What is very clear is Majid Jordan has big time talent. Only time will tell how long it will take them to conquer America. Check it out below.
